Calcium Carbide (UN 1402) is classified as Class 4.3 dangerous goods because it reacts with water or moisture and releases flammable acetylene gas. Therefore, the quality of its steel drums, appropriate drum-size selection, sealing performance and nitrogen-protection procedures are important considerations for safe storage and international transportation.

This article introduces four commonly used export drum sizes for Calcium Carbide — 50 kg, 60 kg, 100 kg and 120 kg — together with the main steel-drum manufacturing process, quality-control procedures and nitrogen-purging considerations for export shipments.

1. Main Packaging Specifications for Export

Calcium Carbide reacts with water or moisture to generate acetylene gas. For this reason, export packaging requires reliable sealing and moisture protection.

New, dedicated steel drums designed for Calcium Carbide are recommended for export transportation. Refurbished or repaired drums are generally not recommended because their sealing performance and mechanical condition may be difficult to verify consistently.

50 kg Steel Drum

The 50 kg drum has a tare weight of approximately 3.5 kg.

Its relatively light weight makes it convenient for manual handling and suitable for smaller-volume orders, trial shipments and warehouses where forklift facilities may not be available.

60 kg Steel Drum

The 60 kg drum has a tare weight of approximately 4.2 kg.

As a custom-size option between the 50 kg and 100 kg drums, it provides a balance between individual handling requirements and packaging efficiency.

The 60 kg drum is a non-standard custom size and requires advance production scheduling.

100 kg Steel Drum

The 100 kg drum has a tare weight of approximately 6 kg.

Its larger capacity reduces the amount of steel packaging required per metric ton of Calcium Carbide, providing improved packaging-cost efficiency for bulk shipments.

Due to its weight, forklift handling is recommended or required depending on the loading and unloading conditions.

120 kg Steel Drum

The 120 kg drum has a tare weight of approximately 7 kg.

Its larger capacity can further reduce packaging material consumption per metric ton and is suitable for large-volume industrial projects.

The 120 kg drum is intended for forklift handling and is a non-standard custom size requiring advance production scheduling.

Because container payload limits and carrier requirements vary, customers should confirm acceptance of the selected drum specification with their freight forwarder or shipping line before booking.

Container Loading Note

The 20GP container is the standard shipping unit for Calcium Carbide.

40ft containers are generally not recommended for Calcium Carbide shipments because the cargo is relatively heavy and container payload restrictions may limit the practical loading quantity.

The final loading quantity depends on the drum specification, net cargo weight, drum tare weight, container payload limit and the requirements of the shipping line.

2. Core Manufacturing Workflow for Calcium Carbide Steel Drums

Calcium Carbide packaging steel drums are manufactured with reference to GB/T 14492-2008, Unreusable steel drum of calcium carbide for packing, together with applicable dangerous-goods transportation requirements.

For international dangerous-goods transportation, packaging must also meet the applicable requirements of the relevant transport regulations and certification system. UN packaging certification, where required, is subject to the applicable performance tests and approval requirements.

1. Steel Sheet Cutting

Whole SPCC / Q235 cold-rolled carbon steel sheets are prepared and cut for the drum body, top and bottom components.

Spliced sheets are not used for the drum body.

The drum-body steel thickness is typically within the 0.8–1.0 mm range, depending on the drum specification and design requirements.

The selected material and thickness are intended to provide sufficient structural strength for handling, stacking and transportation.

2. Body Rolling and Welding

The steel sheet is rolled into a cylindrical shape.

The longitudinal seam is joined by electric-resistance welding to form a continuous drum body.

The welding process is controlled to achieve a sound and continuous seam without visible blowholes or incomplete penetration.

After welding, burrs and sharp edges are removed to improve the drum's finishing quality and handling safety.

3. Reinforcing Hoops and Corrugation Forming

Two reinforcing hoops and multiple circumferential corrugations are formed on the drum body.

These structural features improve the radial strength and rigidity of the drum and help reduce the risk of deformation during handling, stacking and transportation.

4. Top and Bottom Stamping

The drum top and bottom are formed through stamping processes.

The drum top incorporates the required filling and auxiliary openings, including:

  • Main filling opening
  • Nitrogen inlet
  • Vent hole

For drums using a nitrogen-protection design, the dedicated nitrogen inlet and vent arrangement facilitates gas displacement after filling.

5. Double-Crimp Sealing Assembly

The drum body and bottom are assembled using a double-crimp sealing process.

Sealant is applied within the crimped area to enhance sealing performance and help prevent moisture ingress.

The drum top is then assembled to complete the basic closed-container structure.

Reliable sealing is particularly important for Calcium Carbide because international transport requirements for UN 1402 emphasize hermetically sealed packaging.

6. Internal and External Surface Treatment

The internal surface receives appropriate anti-rust/passivation treatment to help protect the steel surface and reduce the risk of contamination.

The external surface is derusted and coated with an anti-rust protective coating.

External colors can be customized according to customer requirements.

7. Fitting Assembly

The required fittings are installed after the main drum body has been formed.

These may include:

  • Threaded filling cap
  • Nitrogen inlet nut
  • Vent-hole nut
  • Related sealing components

All fittings are checked for proper installation and secure closure.

8. Factory Performance Tests

Finished drums undergo quality-control and performance checks appropriate to their design and certification requirements.

Typical inspections may include:

Air-tightness test:
The drum is pressurized under the specified test conditions, followed by a soap-bubble inspection to identify potential leakage points.

Drop test:
Where applicable, drums are tested according to the relevant UN dangerous-goods packaging performance requirements.

Stacking/compression test:
The drum structure is evaluated for its ability to withstand stacking loads and transportation conditions without unacceptable deformation.

The exact test pressure, test method and acceptance criteria should follow the applicable standard, certification and approved drum design.

9. Marking and Printing

Permanent product and transportation markings may include:

  • UN 1402
  • Class 4.3 hazard label
  • Net Weight (N.W.)
  • Gross Weight (G.W.)
  • Calcium Carbide lump size
  • Gas yield
  • “FILLED WITH NITROGEN”
  • Production batch number
  • Country of origin
  • Applicable UN packaging certification marking

The exact marking requirements depend on the applicable dangerous-goods transportation regulations and packaging certification.

3. Nitrogen Purging: An Important Safety Step for Export

Calcium Carbide can react with trace moisture and generate acetylene gas. For export shipments, appropriate moisture control and gas-management procedures are therefore important.

Where nitrogen protection is used, nitrogen purging is carried out after Calcium Carbide filling and before final sealing.

The typical procedure includes:

  • Dry, high-purity nitrogen ≥99.99% is used;
  • Vacuum pumping may be used to remove residual air and moisture from the drum cavity;
  • Dry nitrogen is introduced to displace residual air;
  • The purging cycle is repeated according to the established operating procedure;
  • The nitrogen inlet and vent fittings are securely closed after completion.

The purpose of nitrogen protection is to reduce the amount of oxygen and moisture remaining inside the packaging and help maintain product stability during long-distance transportation.

For Calcium Carbide, international dangerous-goods provisions recognize nitrogen or other suitable means for eliminating air from the vapor space in applicable transport configurations.

Any specific residual-gas limit, such as a ≤1% acetylene concentration target, should be treated as a company operating specification or an applicable approved procedure unless it is specifically required by the relevant regulation or certification.

4. Why Steel Drum Quality Matters for Calcium Carbide

For Calcium Carbide, packaging is an important part of the overall transportation-safety system.

A high-quality steel drum should provide:

  • Reliable moisture protection
  • Effective sealing performance
  • Adequate mechanical strength
  • Resistance to deformation during stacking
  • Secure fittings and closures
  • Clear dangerous-goods identification
  • Compatibility with applicable transportation requirements

From steel-sheet selection and drum forming to welding, sealing, testing, nitrogen protection and container loading, every stage contributes to the safe transportation of Calcium Carbide.

For international customers, selecting the appropriate drum size is also important. Standard sizes such as 50 kg and 100 kg can meet different handling and logistics requirements, while 60 kg and 120 kg custom drums provide additional packaging options for customers with specific operational needs.

5. Safe Packaging, Reliable Transportation

Calcium Carbide is a specialized industrial chemical requiring careful control throughout production, packaging, storage and transportation.

The right steel drum is not simply a container. It is an important part of maintaining product quality and transportation safety from the factory to the customer's facility.
